Scenes from a Birthday Party

Aunt Brooke and Uncle Mark hosted a grand little party for my 3rd Birthday. I invited lots of friends, who couldn't wait to have a splashing good time!

I however, had hesitations about swimming in the waterslide with the "big kids." I preferred the drier activities, like munching on yummies...

Isla (with great aunt Betty) was veeery interested in all that colorful cake business. Next year, Isla!

The best part of the day was when Daddy arrived - he flew in all the way from Brazil, and surprised me at my party! I was so happy, I cried.

Later, everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to me, but we made blowing out the candles a family effort

I also opened some really fantastic gifts!

...And of course, had to try them out as soon as we got home to Mims and Pops'.

What an awesome birthday!

Today was my THIRD birthday! The day was chock-full of fun: going to Playpark with Aunt Brooke, pizza and games for dinner, and a giant cupcake birthday cake! All that, and I still get to have another party? Three is gonna be great!

The day started off great... I swam, while Chula chilled

Then, the sparklers came out. At first they seemed kinda cool - sparkly.

Then, they seemed a bit too fire-ey

It all went downhill (and inside) from there.

Earlier this month, I had the chance to take swimming lessons from Mrs. Linda - the swim coach at St. Joe High School. There was only one spot left, in the big kids' class, but I felt up to the challenge!
First, we learned to blow bubbles with our face in the water, and to "be nice to the water," - to kick softly, put our arms in front of us, and reach and pull!
There were times I got nervous (not a big fan of floating on my back!), but I'll get the hang of it soon.
Before I knew it, we were diving for toys at the bottom of the pool!
When each day was done, I was usually ready for a big snooze!

We were very sad on Sunday, because we weren't able to be with our Daddy on Father's Day. We spent the weekend in the Texas Hill Country, and it really made us wish he were with us. We're waiting for Isla's important papers to be sent, so we can fly back to Brazil, and be together as a family. Hopefully, that'll be soon.

We kicked off the "unofficial" start of Summer with a new kiddie pool. I have to get all my swimming done before we go back to Brazil, where it's the middle of Winter, and too cold to swim!

Can you believe, I'm a Big Sister? My baby sister, Isla Clayton, was born on Friday, April 16, so I've already been filling Big Sister shoes for one week! We've been taking lots of pictures this week - Would you like to meet her?

Here she is!

I fell in love with her the minute I met her, she is such a sweet baby!

Isla had many people who were eager to see her when she was born, including Grandad Giese, Uncle Monroe and Aunt Erica, and my favorite cousins, Isabela and Sofia!

Grandma Burdie couldn't wait to hold her.

After close inspection, most of us feel she looks like our Daddy...
All I know is I love her to pieces!

Saturday, we had an Easter egg hunt at Mims and Pops'. The Easter Bunny had lots of ground to cover, but I got a running start!

Cullen and Evan Janecek helped me spy those hard-to-find eggs, and were happy to teach me all about cascarones!

It didn't take long for the sugar-induced coma to kick in

But, some eggs had special, sparkly prizes!

Our hunt came to a brief halt when Chula alerted on a poisonous snake! Thankfully, Daddy and Mr. Scott (ahem) took care of the problem.

Successful hunt? Make that a YES!

Just call me Flipper, because I'm really happy these days hangin' in the pool. Daddy taught me how to hold my breath under water - my record so far is eleven seconds!

Daddy has been traveling for work, so Mommy and I have had a lot of "quality time" together. Since I'm out of school (it's Brazilian summer vacation time), I've had plenty of time to play with new toys, as well as rediscover some old ones.

Mommy's done her best to try to capture some of those everyday moments, but more often than not, I just want the camera to go away.

Every once in awhile, though, I'll "throw her a bone."

I'm so glad I was able to spend some time over the holiday with my "West Texas Giese" cousin, Isabela! We laughed and played, and opened presents together - just being the Sillies that we are!

Other times, we put on our best pout!

Isabela received crayons and color books, and Uncle Monroe convinced her to share with me.

There's always lots of Christmas festiveness going on at Mims and Pops' house! They waited to buy their big Christmas tree, just so I could help decorate!

For the most part, I chose to adorn the lower branches...

..But sometimes, Mims needed my help picking a perfect spot up high

I brought my handmade, dough ornament all the way from Brazil!

And, some of the others look good enough to eat!

When I'd had my share of ornament-hanging, I took to my other favorite creative outlet: glitter pens!!

Summertime in November

This weekend, we drove to Pirenopolis - a small, historic town, for some fun in the sun.

We stayed at a really great place that had a wonderful swimming pool..

...monkeys to feed (can you see him?)

...and cozy, canopied beds.

They even had a sweet kitten for me to pet!

Oh yeah, we ate some yummy ice cream, and frozen açaí, too!

By the way, have I told you I'm going to be a Big Sister? That's my baby sister in Mommy's belly (I don't think Mommy was ready for this picture!) I can't wait for the baby to arrive in April!

Saturday, we went on an off-road excursion to this Cachoeira - it was beautiful!

I had a great time, and am ready to go back!

Beach Encounters of the First Kind

Can you believe I'm almost 2 1/2 years old, but had never been to the beach? That is, until last weekend! I think it was worth the wait, for my first beach visit was to one of the beautiful praias in Rio de Janeiro!

We went to a small beach near Tio Alex' house. We had to climb down a lot of big rocks to get down to the water.

I admit, I was a little nervous at first.

...But, Daddy and Mommy held on tight!

We couldn't swim at this beach, the waves were too big, but we had a great time watching the surfers!

...And, wrapped up with a wonderful sunset over the water.

Beauty Salon Baby

Today I went for my first Beauty Salon Haircut! I've had many haircuts at home, but never the "celebrity treatment" of a salon!

Mommy gave me some Smarties candy, so I would be very, very still while the lady worked some magic with the scissors

I had a spooky-fun week, full of Halloween festivities! It all wrapped up with Trick or Treating with my friends at the Embassy! I dressed up as a red M&M, although I could've passed for a cheerleader, too!With my best friends, Michael and Anna. Michael dressed as Nemo, and Anna was Minnie Mouse!

Although October is Springtime down here in Brazil, it's also the rainy season, so it's not too often we get a full-sun afternoon perfect for popsicles and a dip in the pool. Today was beautiful and warm - we jumped at the chance to have some fun-in-the-sun!

Sunday, we all went to eat lunch at one of our "go to" restaurants, Naturetto. Mommy and Daddy like it because there's a wide variety of fresh food - I like it because I can hop around outside, and don't have to sit still to eat!I must say, though, that the food IS pretty tasty - especially the fresh watermelon juice...
...And the frozen açaí-banana dessert ALWAYS gets my attention

After all those high-energy goodies, it's anyone's guess how Daddy even catches up with me!

Saturday, we went to Aunt Brooke & Uncle Mark's house to watch my favorite team, the Texas Longhorns. There were plenty of people cheering on my team, and we were all glad to see them win. After the game, we headed outside for some playtime, ourselves!
We took turns tossing a basketball around. Remind me to tell Uncle Mark he needs to have a football next time!
I tend to be a bit shy around new faces...
But always have hugs 'n kisses to share with my Mims
Uncle Mark and Aunt Brooke have to great trees to play hide 'n seek around. I know I'll catch him next time!

Day at the Jaguar Preserve

Today we went to a very exciting place - a jaguar preserve!! The preserve is home to several jaguars, pumas and ocelots who were rescued from illegal poachers. The Big Cats live in large enclosures, but we were still able to get really close! Here's the story of our day!

The first animals we saw were a pair of pumas. The guide lady told us that these pumas consider small children "a snack," so I kept my hands and fingers to myself!
Those "kitties" were mild, though, compared to the ferocious but beautiful onça-pintada. This big guy was very upset that we were near his cage! (Be sure to watch video of him at the end of this post - yikes!)
This one was more docile. The guides told us he was the "sweetest" jaguar at the preserve. I'll take their word for it!
This ocelot was more my size, and a lot more friendly!
After we met all the cats, our guides led us down a long, steep path...
It was well worth it - look what was at the end!
Daddy took me swimming, even into the waterfall! (Daddy said it was OK to use this photo - he looks like a hunk ;)
Mommy stayed out to take photos, but I promise, she was there!
Of course, what you go down, you must return up!

Did I mention there were lots and lots of beautiful birds, too? I loved watching this animated group of blue macaws.

Down here in Brazil, it's Wintertime. It doesn't get very cold, but the weather is really nice - perfect for playing outside! Everyone has been enjoying the "winter break" from school, and we've tried to pack in lots of fun times!
I've spent lots of time over at my friends' casas for playdates (their toys always seem like more fun!)

Mommy and Daddy took me to Parque Cidade (City Park), where we fed the ducks (video to come soon!), and I tried my first coco gelado - straight from the coconut - It was refreshing and yummy!

There's always something interesting going on around our casa...Mommy is getting ready to repaint these chairs. I'm offering my assistance, can't you tell?

Sometimes we'll play in the front yard. Doesn't our fence look kinda sceeery?!

Today I am TWO years old! I feel like such a big girl! The day started off with my friends and teachers at preschool singing Happy Birthday to me, but for some reason, I don't like all that singing attention. I cried at school... I cried at my playdate party...I even cried back in Texas - even though there was an ice cream cake waiting for me!

Back in Brazil...Daddy helped calm my worries...with the help of a cupcake.

...And I was so thankful to receive some very nice gifts

And, after all that, it was time to play, play, PLAY!

Fantastic Fun Times Weekend!

What a wonderful weekend I had in the Texas Hill Country - first with my favorite cousins, Isabela and Sofia, and then with my newest buddies (and partners in silliness), Evan and Cullen Janecek!

The good times kicked off with a visit from Isabela...(isn't she a diva ;)

...and her baby sister, Sofia (kinda precious, huh?)

We had a great time practicing our artistic talents...

Or just pining for some river time.

...And when The Guys (aka River Monkeys) showed up - that's exactly where we went!

After a good swim, we were all ready for a snack and some cartoon-watching

...Except, I don't think Evan and Cullen really appreciated me taking their Legos to munch on!

I can't think of a better way to spend a summer weekend, and can't wait to go back! Next time, I want my Daddy to be there, too. Miss you, Daddy!

Dance Hall Days

Friday night, I had the chance to kick up my heels at one of Texas' oldest dance halls, Schroeder Hall! It was such great fun listening to live music, meeting up with friends, and running around the old dance hall floor!

Of course, the pea gravel kept me pretty busy, too!

I have to take full advantage of the hot summer days while I'm in Texas (the seasons are reverse in Brazil, ya know!), and what better way to do that than to have a splashin' good time! Chula made a chew toy out of my old baby pool, so Mims set me up with a brand, new one - complete with zebra sprinkler and slide!It took a few tries before I got my sliding technique down-pat

Don't worry, Mims and Aunt Brooke helped me out of this freefall (while Mommy snapped the pics - Sheesh!)

I went right back to my splash-a-thon!
Hmmm....not much better than a post-swim snuggle from Mims!

The Texas Fan Club

I was very happy to see several members of my Fan Club waiting for me at Mims and Pop's house - Aunt Brooke, Uncle Mark, their puppies Winston and Mia, and of course, the Kalinowski Kennel Club: Sadie, Chula & Clifford - whew - now that's a lot of four-leggers!

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

Today, my school hosted a special Family Day at the Zoo! I was so excited to see all the amazing animals!
First, we headed to a huge bird cage

We saw lots and lots of colorful parrots, but I think my favorite was this beautiful peacock!

Next, we saw this critter....Daddy said they're called capivara, and they live all over Brazil. All I could think was that it looked a little like the Chupacadra on Daddy's t-shirt - hmmmm....One of my favorite stops was to watch these spider monkeys. They were having a great 'ol time because it was time for them to eat!

Um....so....what exactly are you trying to say???

Finally, we arrived at the serious animals - the Lions, Tigers and Jaguars. I don't think we had too much to worry about, because these tigers were taking a snooze, but Mommy kept me close by - just in case!

We wrapped up our outing at one of our go-to yummy restaurants - how's that for One Fine Day? ;)

Whew! What an Easter week we had! Easter is probably the most-celebrated holiday here, and the Brazilians put on a grand show. We had lots of fun at school, exchanging chocolate eggs with our friends, AND I ended up having TWO visits from the Easter Bunny!

I was a little sad, though, that I wasn't able to hunt Easter Eggs with my cousin, Isabela, like we did last year. We did our best to send our Easter Bunny love through Skype!

Once we got word the Easter Bunny had paid a visit, we headed to the back yard to find some goodie-filled eggs! Daddy helped me get started....
But, I was quickly on my way to finding all the eggs!
Mmmmm....gotta love the gummies!
I must have been in a sugar-induced coma to let Mommy & Daddy put these crazy bunny ears on me! {Sheesh!}

Confessions of a Silly Girl

I'll admit, I'm a silly, Silly Girl. Most of my antics are aimed at making Mommy and Daddy laugh, but sometimes, I even crack myself up!

Today we went to the Embassy's Easter Egg Hunt. There were balloons, playground toys, and lots of yummy treats! I hunted eggs with all the other kids, and really honed my skills for the "real" hunt next Sunday. I hope the Easter Bunny knows what he's up against!

My Texas Easter Bunnies

It's always nice to know I've got special people thinking of me up in the Lone Star State. I won't be able to hunt Easter eggs at Mims and Pops' house like I did last year with cousin Isabela, but that's OK because two of his favorite Easter Bunny helpers sent some fun goodies to help me get ready for the big day!

Yesterday, Mommy and I found a hummingbird in our kitchen! She must have flown in when we had the laundry room open...She was very scared, and quickly became so tired that she had to rest on the windowsill. So, Mommy very gently scooped the little bird into her hands, and tried to get her to drink some sugar water, but she fluttered her fast wings and went back up to the light.

I helped by saying "Come 'ere birdie!"

Finally, we were able to reach her. We took her outside to her favorite little tree, and she started to drink from the tiny flowers while Mommy held her. Then, she fluttered, and drank until she had enough strength to go back to her family.

I'm so happy I was able to save the little hummingbird, and hope to see her again soon near the pretty red flowers!

Here I am, waiting patiently to go to school - see my cute uniform? I go to school three times a week - just in the mornings, but that gives me plenty of time to run, play, and learn some Portuguese!

When I get home, though, I'm usually all played-out, and ready for a good snooze!The rest of my day is filled with plain 'ol silliness

I'm really tuning into my creativity these days. I think I'm inspired by the beautiful pictures I make at school that they display on the wall for everyone to admire.
I love to color at home, but sometimes I get a little carried away with my artistic endeavors

So today, Mommy thought maybe I could get all artsy outside...she got this crazy idea about making homemade finger paint from these things

She said she got the idea from a Mommy website...I don't know what those other mommies are doing, but....turns out the stuff Mommy made was more like...hmmm...icing?

Oh well...a true art-eest doesn't let a little thing like weirdo-paint get in her way when she wants to create! Here's my masterpiece...

The Big 2-0

Months, that is! Friday was my 20-month old birthday - Mommy and Daddy just can't believe I'm only four months shy of my second birthday! I don't know why, I'm such a big girl; I weigh almost 23 lbs and am 30+ inches tall (Mommy knew I had a growth spurt!)
I'm having a good time at school, but I still love being home the most - where I spend my time reading my favorite books...

I have to admit, though...my absolute favorite thing to do (to Mommy & Daddy's dismay) is watch my Dora the Explorer dvd - a gift from Mims!
...but playing outside is my second-favorite thing! Do you wanna come down to Brazil to see me? I'll be waiting!

First Day of (pre) School!

Friday was my first day at my Brazilian pre-school! Mommy was so nervous, but I didn't miss a beat, and immediately started playing with my new friends. All of the teachers are very sweet, we call them our "tias" - and I'm so excited they'll be teaching me Portuguese!

Friday was a great day to start school, because they were having a big party to celebrate the Brazilian festival of Carnaval. School had lots of balloons and decorations, and everything looked very festive!
I can't wait to go back next week!

Whew! Mommy and I survived the ten-hour flight back down to Brazil. We were lucky Daddy was able to meet up with us in São Paulo, so we wouldn't be by ourselves for the layover and final flight home to Brasilia. Personally, I think Daddy just couldn't wait to see us! ;)

One of the great things about coming back after a long time away is getting to play with all my toys! I've been busy playing with puzzles, reading my favorite books, and just having a good 'ol time - somehow, these toys feel new all over to me?!

I'm also excited to be starting pre-school this week! I already know some friends who attend my school, and I can't wait to meet a bunch of new, friendly faces! I'll be sure to have Mommy take plenty of pics to commemorate my big day!

I'm such a busy little girl these days...I've got babies to care for...

Crazy, bouncing toys to play with...

Stuffed friends to arrange, and plenty of cleaning to be done

On top of all that, I'm learning my ABCs and 123s, talking in short phrases, and beginning to identify colors (I definitely know Yellow, Red & Pink!) Mommy and Daddy worry I'm growing up too fast, but I just give them a kiss and promise to always be their Little girl!

Or, in this case, when they no longer do! The other day, Mommy took me on an impromptu shoe-shopping trip after she discovered my little toes were all crumpled up at the end of my shoes! Apparently, I've had a growth spurt here in Texas, and that includes the 'ol footsies! Don't worry, though, I got all set up in some groovin' new tenny-shoes - AND a special treat from the Cookie Factory because Mommy felt so guilty about my smushed toes ;)

This past weekend, Mommy and I were able to travel with Daddy on one of his work trips to Salvador, Brazil. I had lots of fun seeing historic buildings, beautiful beaches, and ladies with colorful outfits. I'm definitely ready to see more of South America!

I had a very Happy Halloween down here in Brazil! We went trick-or-treating at the Embassy, and I got to see all sorts of goblins, princesses, and even a Jedi knight! Everyone loved my little Pumpkin Fairy costume, even though I didn't much care for the headpiece. What a great way to celebrate! Now, if I could just get Mommy to let me have some of that candy...hmmm!!

At first, I wasn't so sure about this trick-or-treating thing...

But, Mommy & Daddy assured me I'd have a great time

They were right, there were lots of fun things to see

And, by the time we got to Daddy's office, I was ready to do it all over again!

We finally made it over to the Pumpkin Patch at the Methodist Church today, and boy, was it a site! Huge pumpkins, tiny pumpkins, even fancy white and green pumpkins - I just couldn't decide which one to pick! Mommy couldn't decide which pictures she likes the best, either, so I told her just to post them all!

Some of these pumpkins were as big as me!

TX-OU Weekend

This weekend I made the long drive up to Dallas for my very first TX-OU weekend! Mommy's cousin, Lindsey and her hubby host a big game-watching party with lots of good food, plenty of TVs, and tons of Longhorn and Sooner cheer - I had a great time and am so excited my Horns won on this, my inaugural year!

West Texas Road Trip

Mommy, Daddy and I headed out to Del Rio, Texas this weekend for my cousin Isabela's 1st Birthday party. Isabela and I got to play, and swim, and catch up on all the baby gossip! We all had a great time. All I can say is, a roadtrip to West Texas sure beats a plane ride to Brazil!

Mims and Pops got a new puppy, yesterday! She's half weimaraner, half German short-haired pointer, and we named her Chula. Pops said they needed to get a puppy to "take over" guard-dog duties, but I think he secretly wanted me to have a playmate that's my size. She's the sweetest thing, and I think we'll be lifelong pals!
